Types and shapes of edges for commercial entry mats
ENTRY MATS EXPLAINED
Raised Beveled Edges: Raised beveled edges are featured on some mats to trap excess water or snow in a “water dam,” protecting surrounding floors. These mats are typically made using molds, which limits the available sizes to those the mold supports. Flat Edge: Most entry mats come with flat edges. For busier entrances, opt for mats with higher yarn density to enhance moisture absorption. While flat-edge mats are suitable for typical use, in high-traffic areas or during inclement weather, water can overflow. If this occurs regularly, consider a larger mat or one with raised edges. Carpet Edge: Some mats feature carpeted edges that match the main surface. These edges offer a tailored and upscale appearance, making them ideal for settings seeking a more refined look compared to rubber or vinyl borders. Matching Color Vinyl Edge: Mats with vinyl backing may include vinyl edges dyed to match the mat color. Vinyl is dyeable (unlike rubber), making it suitable for decorative, color-matched applications where aesthetics are key. Raw Edge: Raw edges are common for large mats used in vestibules, lobbies, or custom installations. These mats may sit flush against walls or beneath door jambs, making nosing unnecessary. Even when exposed to foot traffic, raw edges pose no tripping hazard if placed beneath furniture or fixtures. |
