Commercial Entrance Matting Guide by Placement

Where to place commercial entry mats and what type is best for each location

ENTRY MATS EXPLAINED

Inside Placement:
Indoor mats are typically made from carpet-like nylon or olefin and do not include drainage holes. These mats may be tufted, textured, or feature custom-printed designs. Tufted mats are highly effective at drying shoes and also provide light scraping action. Mats with raised textures enhance debris removal and trap particles in recessed areas. Branded logo mats also add a professional look while keeping floors clean.

Outside Placement:
UV resistance is the most critical factor for exterior mats. Many mats are not tested for prolonged sun exposure, which can lead to fading and damage. Outdoor mats perform the first line of defense by scraping off dirt before entry. Heated rubber mats are available to melt snow and ice, and are also available in stair tread formats. Some carpet-like mats are suitable for exterior use if designed for it. Roll goods, carpet tiles, and low-profile stand-alone mats may also be appropriate depending on the building design and local weather.

Recessed Well / Vestibule Placement:
Recessed vestibule mats are custom-built systems that combine scraping and drying inserts mounted within vinyl or aluminum frames. These mats collect significant debris in the space below and are commonly used in high-traffic commercial entrances like malls, hospitals, medical buildings, and senior care facilities. Highly durable and customizable, these mats enhance appearance while reducing cleaning needs.
